Controversy rages over how much Nasir Atuzi's political connections influenced the content of his writings. The main shift in his writings concerns his religious allegiances, and whether he joined the Ismaelia community out of sincere conviction or rather as a hypocritical career move. Twelver, sheites, have often been eager to say that Atuzi held to their version of Shiism throughout his life. On this interpretation, he only claimed to adopt Ismaelism while he was enjoying the patronage of Ismaelia rulers. Once they were swept away by the Mongols, he was free to repudiate that branch of Shiism openly.
