The most important thing to remember about references is that you are talking to a biased party. This is double true when the reference was given to you by the candidate. What i want to know is what's this person like to work with? What are their strength what are their weaknesses? Maybe i want o check or the things that they took credit for, is that indeed how it went? Are there stylistic things that are unusual about them? So i'm trying to figure those things out, but i'm up against a bias party. You can also just remember to take every piece of praise down a couple of notches.
