Sullivan also thought that marriage had something to teach gays, it had things to teach them about commitment and regularity. It was a kind of taking gay culture out of the bohemian and into the bourgeois, as I recall from that era. The power of his argument came from the fact that he was speaking to a world in which sexual mores and mating habits among straights had changed radically too.
