The Origins of the Ottoman Empire

Turkish was far from the universal language of the Ottoman Empire. There were lots of languages in lots of different regions and identity, if I understand right, seems to have been not necessarily associated with language in every sense. The issue of whether or not we should see Turkish as a universal language or the Empire as a symphony of different languages and cultures is an issue that one can construe in different ways.
