The Great Vowel Shift
The word child or child in Old English meant both singular and plural. It's believed to be connected to the word brethren meaning again multiple family members. Around 1500 the pronunciation of the vowels shifted, one of the big changes was this letter I which went from original E pronunciation to the I pronunciation that we often find today.
