The Importance of Reconnaissance in the Deep Ocean

We're searching in a part of the world that's hardly mapped at all. Only about 5% of it has any real data, but what we think we know is that there are vast plateaus, deep chasm and sharp pinnacles. There appear to be troughs cutting through the area that look to be deeper than 5 km or 3 miles below the surface. So finding something as small as a cockpit flight recorder in that terrain would be extremely difficult.
