John philip susa gave more than 15,000 concerts over 40 years. He was deeply attuned to things only live music could do. In 19 o six he wrote an essay called the menace of mechanical music. It's a catalogue of sad, alarming predictions about how recorded music would drain our lives of meaning and joy. We're going to see if any of these fears have been realised.
