In his final book, Brevard Child draws attention to the theological connection you make between grappling with the theological grammar of biblical texts and then the guidance of God's will. He was influential on me in thinking about the various layers of scripture that are transmitted through the tradition as a distinctive form of that tradition's knowledge of God through scripture. And it's surprisingly difficult when you go through a decade or more of rigorous training and biblical studies to come out on the other side and say, "I know what the Bible is about"
