The 1970s were a really bad decade for both stocks and bonds. The 60-40 portfolio came to be recognized as the baseline to which all retirement portfolios should be shared. Money market funds gave ordinary investors an easy way of investing their cash in short-term debt. commodities also did very well, becoming a hot area for speculators and investment firms.
