The more we have earned letters after our name, the more we refuse to acknowledge someone could know something that we don't know. It is great tragedy of all terminal degrees. A phd and an m d are obvious examples. I was amazed that if we phd students got anything less than a b, we were on academic probation, and then we had to repeat the class. And so there's no question that the quality is getting less and less. But also, tragically, as the quality is declining, it seems like there's a growing a resistance to acknowledging when you don't know something.
