Angles argues that the rise of private property in Athens was linked to the emergence of slavery as a mode of production. As wealthy landowners began to accumulate land and property they needed labor to work the land. Slaves were brought in from other parts of Greece and beyond and their labor became the basis of the Athenian economy. The state emerged because of contradictions which were already existing within the gents, says angles.
