The Story of Robin Hood
Several real-life outlaws actually became folk heroes in the Middle Ages. Their stories certainly influenced the early songs and ballads of Robin Hood. The local sheriff had a duty to round up outlaws, but it was so difficult to find them that authorities often just let them be. And there must have been a sense that some of the outlaws had been unfairly treated.
