The Cost of a Home Console

In the 1970s, Magnavox used discrete components to make home video games cheaper. This meant that each cabinet could be pretty costly to produce. The Odyssey was sold for $100 in 1970's money - a per-unit cost. You aren't setting out to manufacture millions or even thousands of copies of a single arcade game.
