The Fall in the Garden of Eden
The Sumerian civilization was in the lower Tigris Euphrates Valley, a world of mud. The mud was fertile and therefore big settlements could grow up there. Among what we found there was this cylinder seal for stamping properties. As we have seen, there is a woman on the right with a serpent and a male figure. It is easy to see how archaeologists might have interpreted an image of the goddess of the Tree of Life as an early rendition of the fall in the garden. However, from all we know of the Sumerian tradition ... there was no sense of sin involved in people's view of this tree.
