The Paradox of Socialism in the 20th Century
In 1953, I've found it really interesting talking to older people who were around you in that time. They said actually in 49, 50, 51, there was a genuine sense of optimism. The first resistance to this version of East European Soviet domination comes in East Berlin in 53. And so the East German state is the first one to experience the crushing of that. That does set the path for the next 35 years.
