World War I upset the apple cart. Trotsky held steadfast in his belief in proletarian revolution, trying to hold all the threads together and participating in the 1959 Zimmarwald Conference. The French quickly tired of Trotsky, who had moved to France as a magazine correspondent, and deported him to Spain. But in 1917, the February Revolution overthrew Nicholas II, and Trotsky hurried back to Russia.
