In the days and weeks afterwards, any vessels that were trying to sail through the sun to straits near Krakatoa would just have to sail through huge chunks of pumice. And at that time, many of them were actually carrying dead bodies. Roughly 36,000 people died, mostly from Java and Sumatra.
