The Soldier, the Athlete, the Hard Working Farmer
The soldier, the athlete and the farmer are all examples of diligence and hard work in pursuit of a particular goal with the promise of a reward. Paul wants timothy to meditate upon his statements at this point, believing that he will receive greater insight as he does so. Each of the metaphors in question occur on a number of occasions within paul's writing.
