Confucianism is a corrective to some kind of modern western views of the self. So, at least for confucius, you you can't think without culture. He really thinks culture is forming the basis of your thought. Who you are as a person is inextricably bound up with your social roles. It's not just that you shaw are this fully formed human being, and then you happen to be these other roles as well. You don't really have a meaning ful self outside the context of your social role. Yet.
