#153 Keith Creel: Lessons from Life on the Railroad

The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish

CHAPTER

Is There a Capital Intensity in Rails?

At CP, when we implemented precision scheduled railroad back in 2012, 2013, we were running with 1500 locomotives in service a day. Today, we're moving more freight with about two thirds of that. And it sounds like that actually makes the rails less capital intensive as well. Fewer sightings, fewer maintenance, the yard switching, does that change at all? No, you're exactly correct. At the end of the day, you're able to do more with the less. You're able to run the railway more efficiently.
