The Society of St. Pius X wants to proclaim religious liberty as part of the European project and opposing communism. Pope John Paul II was warned about such a move by his predecessor, Leo XIII. The SSPX has attacked Dignitatis Jimane, which is the statement of religious liberty that the council produced. And so when that happens, it looks like to most people that inner realism is being set aside.
