People who gain weight at the end of an endurance event are a sign of problems. The theory is that normally when we exercise, our body shuts off a hormone that retains water. But in some cases for various reasons, you get inappropriately high levels of this hormone. It's called ADH or vasopressin and it basically retains fluid. So then what happens is you don't lose the fluid you should have lost. And the consequence then is that your sodium levels go down. That seems to me the most plausible explanation is not salt loss. It's fluid retention. She also said that she had heat stroke. I'd rather suggest that she was probably hot, but not heat stroke hot
