Brahms Piano Quartet in G Minor (+Schoenberg!)

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Orchestrated Version by Schermberg

The piece sounds very much like an early symphony of brahms. What i love about this orchestration is that it seems authentic, like something brahms would have done himself. There are things later on that they get a little wild. Do you hear that snapping noise? In the orchestrated version, schermberg asks the low string instruments to play coleno - which means to hit the strings with the wood of the bow. When dozens of musicians do that, you get that snapping sound that reminds you so much of the folk music style.
