What Are Atmospheric Rivers?

An atmospheric river is a narrow band of high water vapor that forms in the atmosphere. These are called tropical plumes, water vapor surge or cloud bands. They can move between 7 and 25 times as much water as the flow of the Mississippi River. The strongest ones have had major impacts on California specifically.
