In 18 69, there were between 350 and 500 thousand people who made that trail. And they were mostly middle class, white farming families from the midwest. You also get some european immigrants, and you also have both free and enslaved black people as well. So it's a whole bunch of different people - single men to families. Lots of people were moving west.
