Shiv means stabbing and a stabbing implement. Shim is something popping to use things to level up or to prop them up. monkey patching is basically the idea of taking a library and patching it without essentially having those patches move into the library itself. And typically this is done by, in PNPM you do it this way, via patch packages library that does this. It's kind of like a non-permanent or potentially permanent but not merged into the core library modification of another library.
In this episode of Syntax, Wes and Scott talk about what polyfills, transpiling, and monkey patching mean, how and when to do it, and libraries that can help you out.
