graham: Any idea that's harmless in a significant percentage of times and places is taboo in ours. He gives as a trivial example, harvard distributed to its faculty and staff a brochure that said it was inappropriate to complement the clothing of a colleague or a student. So no more nice shirt. Graham says this principle is probably rare among the world's cultures, past or present. There are probably more where it's considered especially polite to compliment some one's clothing thanwhere it's considered improper.
