When the NPFL first reached Monrovia in July 1990, fighters flocked to the battlefront. Many of the young country boys and girls who joined up to take part in the battle of Monrovia had never been to the city before. They called themselves by grandiose war names, half-serious, half-playful,. sometimes inspired by Hollywood movies and videos they had seen, such as Rambo, Terminator, and Jungle Killer. The checkpoints were a source of thousands of harrowing experiences, and were perhaps the single most traumatic memory of the war until April 1996.
