San Francisco, a Liberal City?
There is a history of Bay Area Jews that go way back to the 1800s. Were they New York Jews? Yes, but not practicing Jews. So I don't think there was any sense of ostracism right there. There's a history of freedom in San Francisco going back to the gold rush. In modern times in the 50s, it was the home of the beatniks. And then when you put that together with Berkeley, yeah, on one side and Stanford campus, on the other side, it was just a breeding ground for rock and roll students or drugs and all that stuff.
