The History of Space Stations

There were space station meetings as early as 1951, if you can believe that. Of course, it wasn't until President Reagan in the early 1980s announced that the United States was going to build a space station that people really became aware of it. The Soviets also had prior experience with space stations. Their salute program launched seven space stations into orbit between 1971 and 1991.
