The Role of Climbers in the American Alpine Journal
H. Adams Carter, who was my predecessor at the American Alpine Journal, and Bob Bates of the Harvard Five were responsible for bringing American mountaineering up to the standards that it enjoyed before the war. And so there was just a small number of Americans, but they all ended up in the 10th Mountain Division. You had folks like Jack Durance who'd come over from Germany because all the Germany had the skill sets. So Tito Piazza had been sold in 5, 7, in 1900, you know?
