Adams Carter, who was my predecessor at the American Alpine Journal, and Bob Bates of the Harvard Five were responsible for bringing American mountaineering up to the standards that it enjoyed before the war. And so there was just a small number of Americans, but they all ended up in the 10th Mountain Division.
