The Problem With Carbon Offsets
In early June, wildfires in multiple Canadian provinces sent smoke across Canada and the United States. At least some of those forest fires were actually fires in commercial forestry plantations that are counted as carbon offsets. Carbon offsets are meant to reduce or remove carbon emissions by compensating for emissions being made elsewhere. So considering that a forest fire in a carbon offset plantation means the emission of carbon, not a reduction, we're going to focus on a little discussed aspect of that event.
