The Battle of Wale Kannell

Wale Kannell was the last major island in the Solomon Islands chain. In a combined arms war you would have had an air force element involved to achieve air superiority over the battlefield but there was no air force component available. The only air force or army air forces units were flying obsolescent P-39s and P-40s so marine air power ended up being it. It's Guadalcanal becomes an unsinkable aircraft carrier because these pilots were flying out of a series of airfields that were within artillery range of the Japanese on Guadal canal.
