The Cholera Epidemic in Paris
The cholera pandemic of 18 32 killed 20,000 people in paris. Prime minister cassimir perier and general jean maximilian lamark were among those who died from the disease. The death toll was so high that a society ball became an epi centre of infection - women got sick and died before they even changed out of their dresses. It is thought to have been part of a world wide cholera pendemic which started in south asia then followed trade routes up through russia and over into europe.
