The Dilemma of General Readers and Activist Readers

The idea of the general reader is an incredibly often used context during the second half of the 20th century. Hofstadter and Bostin in particular are writing for what they explicitly term general readers. On the other hand activist readers are looking I think often for radical alternatives to the status quo. They have more specifically political rather than literary reasons for reading history that they want to read.
