What's the Point of the Oath of Allegiance?

The pope objected very much to the oath of allegiance. Maybe actually james was looking to divide and rule, maybe what he wanted was to split the catholic vote in two. Blackwell's reaction was indicative that if j ames was seeking to create division, then he'd done a pretty good job. The oath would continue to be used right to the end of the century to trap the unwary.
