Even when Americans liked the music Britpop didn't feel to us like a movement. We cherry-picked a very small handful of hits we liked from the wave and they charted as one-offs. Spice Girls had the biggest album of 1997 in the US. They sang with British accents, celebrated British culture. To us this was Britpop. And the Spice Girls so-called girl power slogan felt more like a movement to young Americans than Britpop ever did.
