Battle of the Dictator Dads

Assad grew up knowing that he and his people were one fairly small player in a game board dominated by the US and the USSR. He saw two Arab Israeli wars as a child, both of which were disastrous for the Arab side of that equation. The most significant historical event of his childhood was probably his father's bombing of the city of Hama.
