She says the idea of using spiritual practices and this idea that you're going to sort of become one with a cosmic consciousness is very prevalent in American meditation culture. Kohn: Any idea that you are pursuing one of these spiritual paths that involves at least loosening the grip of the ego is kind of undermined by the idea that what you're doing is building up a really firm and forceful ego as a super spiritual person.
