The Conservative Judaism of the Post-War Era
The end of World War II and the rise of Israel created an opening for a kind of conservative Judaism that didn't really exist when Mitch Duck was a kid. The Nazis have really kind of discredited race science and put this new taboo on anti-Semitism in the US. It provides an outlet for Jews to sort of rapidly become an unquestioned kind of whiteness which hadn't really been true before the war. And it also provokes because of its demonstration of the horrors of anti-Semitism and where it could lead, I think a profound anxiety to protect and integrate into America on behalf of a lot of American Jews.
