Mastodon started as a reaction on of Twitter shutting down those APIs. Ravel worked with Jack Dorsey and Odeo and early Twitter. He gave this history of how these different protocols all started. The biggest thing for me, when it comes to Mastodon, is that fact that you have a lord,. Like whoever runs the server, the server you're on, and they decide to shut it down, you just lose data.
