S conformance should mean something f putsy and free standing. It's like the meaning of the word character is not a hundred % clear in the standard, and implementations apparently exploit that. I've always been just a little bothered by the fact that allof the sea ard library character functions take int. That's always bothered me. There was an eight bit type.
