The Doubleness of Men and Mothers in Law
She talks about the absurd doubleness of men in their attitudes to mothers. Men want something that they can't have, a woman who is both independent and generic. And you can't be independent and generic in the second sex. She identifies the grotesque contrast between the way some men talk about their mother and then talk about their mothers in law. It does happens so much now, but i'm old enough to remember when comedy, t v, comedy, often turned on the mother in law joke.
