The Moralizing Religions of the Romans
There's been a shift from mostly amoral religions, with gods not very concerned about moral behavior. A popular hypothesis is that these powerful, omniscient, moralizing gods arose at certain points in history to allow increasing social complexity. And they would make complex civilization possible by insuring that people basically all believed there was an all knowing, supernatural police force who would punish all wrong doing even if nobody saw you do it.
