Stanford researchers including Andrew Elle discovered that they could use a certain type of chip to train large data sets in order to create better algorithms. This was essentially a watershed moment for AI and deep learning because it enabled neural networks to be trained a lot more quickly. And even though this was a discovery from Silicon Valley, it ended up being adopted on the wider scale with the biggest implications in China.
