Cotkin: It is completely false that communism fell as the result of a parallel civil society. Widespread, formal, organized opposition simply did not exist under communist regimes. Disgruntled intellectual are in no way autonomous or represent the masses. In effect, outside the uncivil society, you existed as a type of social ghost vaslav hovels.
