The Darkening of the Heavens and the Earth's Shaking
The remaining verses of the chapter contain a series of three oracles, all connected with some days that are coming. The first refers to making the sun go down at noon and darkening the earth broad daylight. Some have seen this as a reference to the partial eclipse that would have occurred on june sixteenth, seven, 63 b c. Another possibility is that the reference to the nile is drawing our minds into the story of the exodus which was precipitated by the oppression of the poor slaves.
