The Importance of Race in My Life

When you were growing up, there were fascist marches through the town where I lived. The British National Party had its headquarters in that area of South East London. So racism really was the backdrop to my teenage years and that was the reason why when I got to university, I got very involved in anti-racist activism. That's when I started writing. It shaped my entire career after I left school because I went from an environment in which my colour really didn't matter so much, or at least I wasn't so aware of it."
