The Different Nature of Campaigning

Presidential candidates don't go out and campaign themselves. They are understood to be standing for the presidency, but they have surrogates campaigning on their behalf. So how we understand presidents and our relationship with them as voters has changed over the years partially because of them being much more front and center.
