In the old way, you would go into a maintenance window. You do have to have an understanding of what your data is going to look like. There are some sophisticated techniques out there that really help in this space. When it doesn't do that, I've personally seen entire fleets of EC2 systems exhibit this beautiful, almost sinusoidal pattern.
